One of taxi driver Max’s fares for the night is the chatty and charming lawyer Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith). Max’s next fare Vincent is also chatty and charming – but he’s a hitman.
Max (Jamie Foxx) is tempted by the money that Vincent (Tom Cruise) is offering to be driven around Los Angeles for the rest of the night while he takes care of business. It isn’t that much, considering what Vincent puts Max through. For Max, Vincent turns out to be the personification of a bad dream, involving a betaal-like character who has climbed on to Max’s shoulder and refuses to get off.
Michael Mann’s Collateral is a stylish and gripping thriller that stars Tom Cruise in one of his best-known roles. Collateral came out in 2004, after Cruise had already completed two Mission: Impossible films and was well established as a global star.
Even as Cruise delivered massive blockbusters, he was game to experimenting with his please-all persona. He appeared in a string of risky films, among them The Color of Money (1986), in which he played a pool hustler, and Born on the Fourth of July (1989), in which he portrayed a Vietnam War veteran.
