A new book investigates what happened to the pistol with which Bhagat Singh killed a British officer

Scholar and lawyer AG Noorani, in his book The Trial of Bhagat Singh, makes a noteworthy claim that “but for the daring venture in the Assembly, Bhagat Singh might have successfully eluded the police (in the JP Saunders case)”. This unexplored aspect of history greatly interests me. After all, what would the course of Indian history have been had Bhagat Singh not been sentenced to death in the Lahore Conspiracy Case?

So, the questions I decided to explore were simple – where had this pistol come from, why was this pistol so significant and how was it used to bring about the execution of Bhagat Singh?

Let’s start with the first question. There is no known evidence to show where the pistol came from. It is said that Chandra Shekhar Awad, the commander-in-chief of the HSRA, gave the pistol to Bhagat Singh. Azad was known for his love of firearms and usually he was the one who supplied them to revolutionaries.
