The Delhi Police was imposing widespread restrictions in Connaught Place and central areas of the national capital ahead of a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party planned for Friday.
The political campaign has announced that it will hold a “Lehra Do Tiranga” demonstration at Connaught Place at 5 pm on Friday, to wave the national flag.
The demonstration comes as a response to the arrest of Cockroach Janta Party leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ajinkya Shinde on Wednesday, a day after they trespassed at Jantar Mantar and waved the national flag.
While Ranka and Das remain in judicial custody, Shinde was released on a personal bond.
They were detained on Tuesday with other members of the Cockroach Janta Party after they “sneaked into” Jantar Mantar to protest the authorities’ decision to denotify the area as a designated protest site. The leaders have also been accused of violating a bond and obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties.
The arrests were widely condemned by the Opposition, with several leaders including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi saying that “waving the tricolour” at Jantar Mantar during a peaceful protest “is not a crime” and jailing young persons for it is an “act of cowardice”.
Besides the Cockroach Janta Party, the Aam Aadmi Party has urged its workers and supporters to join the protest.
