Man accused of creating Muslim women ‘auction’ app discharged for lack of evidence

A Mumbai court has discharged a 25-year-old man who was arrested in 2022 in the case related to the “online auction” of Muslim women, The Indian Express reported. The court noted that there was no evidence that he was involved in creating the app or sharing photographs of the women.

The case is related to the app “Bulli Bai”, which was used to display photographs of more than 100 Muslim women with derogatory comments for an alleged online auction in January 2022. It was the second such incident in less than a year at the time. In July 2021, photographs of nearly 80 Muslim women had been put up for sale on the “Sulli Deals” app.

Vishal Jha, an engineering student at an institute in Bengaluru at the time, was among persons arrested for allegedly being involved in creating the Bulli Bai app, the newspaper reported.

The cyber cell unit in Mumbai had filed a complaint under sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to promoting enmity between groups, deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings, stalking, defamation and insulting the modesty of a woman. The Information Technology Act had also been invoked.
