‘Why are they stealing our votes?’: Bengaluru protest brings frustration with SIR to the fore

Ravi G, a construction labourer from the village of Heggadadevanakote in Mysuru, has lost several days of wages in the process of running around to try and get his documents verified for the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in Karnataka.

“They are asking for my father’s death certificate, I don’t know where to go for it,” he said. He was also asked to produce his Class 10 marks sheet. “I didn’t even go to school ,” the 38-year-old said. “How will I produce a marks sheet?”

Although the process had already cost him some income, Shiva chose to forgo one more day’s wages on Thursday to travel 150 km to register his anger with the SIR at the “People Tribunal” organised by civil society organisations and student groups in Bengaluru’s Freedom Park.

The event received significant attention because of the presence of the Cockroach Janata Party’s Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, as well as YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and actor Prakash Raj. Hundreds gathered to demand the resignation of the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision.
